New Brunswick Jazz Project's 13th Annual March Women in Jazz Series- Akiko Tsuruga Quartet
WELCOME
"Jerry Weldon is one of today's leading proponents of Soul Jazz who represents the 'bar-walkin', hard-blowing, tenor legends in our contemporary American Jazz scene." ~Gary Walker, WBGO Radio
Veteran tenor sax man Jerry Weldon joined the legendary Lionel Hampton Orchestra in 1981 and has worked with dozens of jazz luminaries over the past three plus decades. In 1990, Jerry joined Harry Connick Jr.'s newly formed big band and Jerry was seen daily as part of the “house band” on HARRY, Connick’s daytime variety show which aired from 2016-2018. Jerry can also regularly be found gigging, both as a leader and a sideman, at clubs in the New York area...and beyond.
"A thoughtful soloist whose subtle swing has plenty of fiber."
~Ira Gitler, The Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz.
"...one of the strongest tenormen on the scene today."
~ MVD Entertainment Group
"When it comes to tenor saxophone sounds, Jerry Weldon has one of the biggest, and warmest, around."
~ The Star Ledger

With eight CD’s as a leader and more sideman sides than even he can count…or remember, this native New Yorker’s performance/recording résumé reflects his venerable tenor tenure and reads like a virtual "Who's Who of Jazz." Jerry is a charter member and featured soloist with Harry Connick Jr.'s big band. He has toured the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia with Harry and was also part of Connick's Broadway musical production, "Thou Shalt Not" and appeared on stage as well as in the orchestra.
One of the most respected names in jazz since the 1950s, NEA Jazz Master Lou Donaldson has worked with such innovators as Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk. With a full, resonant sound and vocabulary that combines straight-ahead jazz, blues, bebop, and soul music, the alto saxophone master affectionately known as Sweet Poppa Lou coined his style “soul sax.”
From his front-row seat, Donaldson will share his high vibration with club goers as well as performers Akiko Tsuruga, Fukushi Tainaka, Champian Fulton, Charlie Sigler, Zaid Nasser, and surprise special guests. Join us in saluting a legend on his 96th birthday!
